Captured in 2019, Aleftina Karasyova valued the hidden narratives woven into the fabric of each garment. By deconstructing these pieces, she uncovered stories of cut, form, and materiality. Through this process, she reinterpreted and added new value to the original, rebuilding the garment to create a fresh narrative that honored its past.
“She is eager to establish if her transformation is complete, wants to know whether she is ready to disappear and finally decides that vanishing is the solution.” - Annelie Andre performing META
Originally titled 'Chasing a Landscape,' this photographic series investigates the notion of exploring abandoned and decayed places, spaces, and landscapes. The derelict often draws those seeking gritty experiences, as explorers pursue authenticity while roaming through realms of wonder and adventure. This journey evokes a form of mental time travel, realized through the memories left behind.
Amidst a maze of traces, individuals confront risks and embrace courage, driven by a longing for a mindful experience of the past. Here, the thirst for freedom and imagination harmonizes with themes of ruination and trauma.
The images explore the essence of being in space, giving voice to ruins and evoking a dreamlike feeling of nostalgia intertwined with the memories of the landscape.
Originally entitled 'Dimensional Shift,' this series of photographs delves into the layers that define urban environments, shaped by history and the accumulation of events over time. Visible and invisible borders divide these landscapes into distinct areas, where individuals coexist, influenced by their unique experiences. These images highlight the awareness of layered meanings present within the city, emphasizing the multiplicity of place and space.
This series of photographs explores the separation between nature and the built environment in London. The images illustrate the taming of nature and its confinement to the periphery. Over time, however, this process is reversed, allowing nature to reclaim its rightful space. The intentional blurring in the images creates a realm where the imaginary can transform into the real.
My photographic practice embraces a surrealist experience of space and presence. Through portraiture, I explore the individual as a subject, capturing flashes of the momentarily real in the floating present. Each portrait seeks to reveal a fleeting truth, an essence glimpsed only in that instant.
